Algal blooms advisory issued

FREDERICTON - New Brunswickers are advised to be aware of the potential health risks posed by algal blooms in lakes and other recreational bodies of water. The Department of Health says that, as a rule, if water looks different than usual, avoid it. Water should be avoided if it appears to have a thick, blue-green or green, paint-like scum. During a bloom, swimming, water-skiing and other water activities should be avoided. Blooms may form rapidly, so increased awareness is required.

Citizens oppose adult video shop

MINTO - More than 40 concerned citizens filled the Minto council chamber to overflowing at this week's regular meeting to voice their opposition to a new business that sells adult videos and novelty items to those over 18 years old. Rev. Phil Styles told council they have about 500 signatures on a petition against having the store - called Passionate Kisses - in their village. Mayor Eric Barnett said the store operator isn't breaking any village bylaws or provincial or federal laws. "Until bylaws are broken, there is nothing we can do,'' he said. When asked by Styles if there is anything positive citizens could do, Barnett said they could petition their MLA and MP to have the law changed.

Six people arrested in grow-op bust

MINTO - A lengthy police investigation into street level drug distribution in the Minto area has resulted in the arrests of six people. The arrests this week include two men, two women, a male under 18 and a female under 18. Searches of a wooded property in the Young's Cove area as well as a residence in Minto resulted in the seizure of 200 marijuana plants. An indoor marijuana grow operation was dismantled. Police also seized a large amount of money, marijuana resin and other items. Numerous drug related charges are pending. The investigation is ongoing. All of those arrested have been released from custody and are scheduled to appear in court in Burton in early October.
