Department spokesperson Tyler McLean said the bridge on Mactaquac Road will be reduced to one lane until the project is finished later this year, with only periodic full closures.

“The schedule for the approach channel bridge project has been adjusted in order to avoid any prolonged full bridge closure during rehabilitation work,” he said in an emailed statement. “The project completion date remains November 2024.”

Work began in 2022 on overhauling the bridge, which was built in 1968, next to the Mactaquac dam. The project was aimed at increasing the bridge’s weight limit and extending its life by 30 years.

The bridge was originally supposed to be closed for several months last year to accommodate the work. It was shut down for a week in November as new concrete was poured on part of the deck, then reopened to one lane of traffic.

McLean said the bridge will only be closed periodically for three days this year to allow concrete to be poured on the deck.
