Hospital floor closed to visitors

ST. STEPHEN - The first floor of the Charlotte County Hospital has been closed to visitors for at least 48 hours. The decision was made Sunday to close the floor after seven individuals began exhibiting gastro-intestinal symptoms of vomiting and diarrhea. Four of the cases were confirmed as c-difficile. Health Canada describes c-difficile as a bacterium that causes diarrhea and other serious intestinal conditions. It's also the most common cause of infectious diarrhea in hospitalized patients in the industrial world. The hospital will continue to monitor the patients and the patients must be symptom-free for 48 hours before the hospital can consider lifting the ban, which was issued Sunday. The closing is a cautionary infection control measure that will remain in place until risk to patients and staff is low. Visitors to other area hospitals are advised not to visit hospitals if they're exhibiting the symptoms of vomiting or diarrhea. Kim Roberts, region manager of infection prevention and control, said the best preventative measure is to use good hygiene, particularly proper hand washing.
