Candidate debates set this week

Fundy Royal candidates will participate in two election debates in the riding this week. Discussing the issues are Conservative candidate Rob Moore, a member of the last Parliament, Liberal candidate Mark Wright, Rob Moir of the NDP and Erik Millett of the Green Party. The debates will be held Wednesday at Hampton Middle School at 7 p.m., and at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 2 on the Kingston Peninsula on Thursday at 7 p.m.

Buddies called instead of police

A resident on Woodland Court in Rothesay was awakened at 2 a.m. Monday by a loud banging at the back door of her house, but instead of calling police she phoned some friends from uptown Saint John to come and help her. By the time the group arrived, those who were pounding on the door were long gone. When members of the Rothesay Regional Police Force were finally called by the woman and arrived on the scene, they found the group of 10 people milling around in back of the house but couldn't find the men, who were dressed in dark clothing, anywhere in the area. The group of people the woman called to protect her also destroyed any footprints or evidence the culprits may have been left behind.

Cops nab two shoplifters

Staff at the Rothesay Superstore phoned police with a report about a pair of shoplifters just after 3 p.m. Monday. When police arrived, the male suspect took off toward the back of the store and straight into the arms of waiting police officers. The female suspect fled through nearby woods and eventually appeared along Campbell Drive, where a brief foot pursuit ensued before she was apprehended. Police said the pair had stolen $400 worth of various goods, which were recovered.
