ST. ANDREWS - Mayor John Craig says the town has received a good offer from a company hoping to run a hockey school next summer.

Craig said there used to be a summer hockey school every year for about 30 years but the town has been without one for the last two years when the former operator did not renew the contract.

Craig said before town council can accept the offer that is on the table, the town must go to the public to see if there are any other interested parties. The mayor said council made a motion to provide a 30-day opportunity for anyone else interested in operating the school to put in a proposal before a decision is made.

Proposals will be accepted until noon on Nov. 3. Anyone requesting information may contact Chris Spear at 529-5120.

He said the hockey school is a good opportunity for young players who want to improve their skills in the off-season, and is also a good opportunity for businesses in the town. The hockey school will be held at the W.C. O'Neill Arena.

While some of the participants are from the local area, Craig said people from other communities might enter their children in the school, which would bring families to the town to stay, eat and shop.

"It's good economic development for the town. It doesn't cost taxpayers anything."
