SUSSEX - Sussex-born RCMP Sgt. Doug Lockhart will receive the prestigious Order of Merit of the Police Forces during a ceremony at Rideau Hall in Ottawa today.

Lockhart, currently based in Fredericton where he serves as co-ordinator for community policing and aboriginal youth, will be given the award that is presented to police members for careers of exceptional service. Gov.- Gen. Michaëlle Jean will make the presentation.

Lockhart is planning to retire in July, but in more than three decades as a Mountie has served the RCMP in many capacities. He has been a major crime investigator and one of the first emergency response team members for New Brunswick's J Division.

In Sussex, where he served for seven years, he helped lead the switch from town policing to RCMP in 1999.

He also helped orchestrate the creation of the new detachment on Leonard Drive, which sits on property that once belonged to Lockhart's family, and is largely responsible for the success of Neighbourhood Watch locally.
