ST. STEPHEN - School theatres in St. Stephen and St. George are in need of major repairs, says District 10's community school district co-ordinator.

Cathy Halstead said the theatres at Fundy High School in St. George, St. Stephen High School and St. Stephen Middle School have a long list of problems that need fixing.

"The Department of Education doesn't fund them anymore, so there isn't any money coming in," said Halstead. "So if your school built a theatre 30 years ago, it hasn't been up-kept."

Halstead said Fundy High's theatre is not safe to be in. The chairs are the biggest problem, she said, with some missing the seat and others so unstable you could fall to the ground when sitting on it.

St. Stephen High's theatre also has problems with sound and lighting, she said.

"They can't control the lights," said Halstead. "The house lighting goes on and off spontaneously through shows."

St. Stephen Middle School's theatre has undergone renovations in the past and Halstead said it is in the best condition of the three, but is not wheelchair accessible.

Halstead said she hasn't received the final quotes for all three theatres, but when she does she plans to apply to the provincial government for funding.

Charlotte County's Got Talent has said it will be donating all its proceeds to fix up the St. Stephen High School theatre.

On Friday Fundy High School is holding The Broken Chair Concert. The concert will feature local talent from the school and will begin at 7 p.m.

Halstead said it is called The Broken Chair Concert. because the chairs are actually broken. The event listing warns guests to sit at their own risk.
