Judge suggests keeping an eye on repeat thief
Published Saturday November 28th, 2009

SUSSEX - The courts want to understand the reason for Hazel Rogers' repeated stealing habits before sentencing her.
The 62-year-old Hampton woman appeared in Sussex provincial court this week and pleaded guilty to stealing $102.72 in items from the Superstore in Sussex on Oct. 23.
Crown prosecutor John Henheffer said on that day last month, store security watched Rogers on a surveillance camera make her way through the aisles, filling a black President's Choice shopping bag with goods. She then walked out of the store without making any attempts to pay for them.
Henheffer said in 2005 Rogers was handed a conditional sentence for shoplifting.
Judge Henrik Tonning was presented a letter from Rogers' doctor, the contents of which were not revealed in court.
The prosecutor requested that an updated pre-sentence report be completed instead of sentencing her right away.
"You don't want to have to stand up and say she has to go to jail?" Tonning asked the Crown.
Not without further information on the underlying problems she may have, Henheffer said.
Rogers will appear back in Sussex provincial court for sentencing on Jan. 21.
"If she doesn't stop stealing from people...it might be a good idea that she doesn't go out alone for a while," the judge suggested primarily to the three people who accompanied her to court.
