A rocky response

Confirming how much the city expects to spend this year on roads, and how much it will cost to bring all roads to acceptable standards, was not an easy task. Many of the figures were contained in a recent report compiled by Paul Groody, commissioner of municipal operations, but several references were vague and required clarification. The Telegraph-Journal tried to reach Groody every day this week, except for the Canada Day holiday, but he did not respond to emails or phone calls. The cities of Moncton and Fredericton provided this information in a single day; the figures will be presented in Monday's story. When Pat Woods, Saint John's acting city manager, was asked for the information on Friday, he quickly provided the Port City's figures.

Guess Groody thinks we citizens have no right to the information and work we are paying for and he doesn't listen or respond to anybody but his boss.

The real problems in SJ are with health care and air quality; not as the Urinal suggests, - pot-holes.

Too many of us don't have doctors, are getting sicker while we wait for treatment, and too many of us (98% more than the national average) are dying of lung cancer. Health care and air quaility are both provincial responsabilities and this paper should focus on what really matters to the people of SJ.

Start asking the province for some answers. Do the same thing to Graham, Doherty, Murphy, Lamrock, or Schryer as you're doing to Court.

Everyday print an article about a patient that died while waiting for treatment, or that doesn't have a docter, or that didn't smoke but contacted lung cancer anyway.

Billy Joel enough about the air quality, this article is about the city and it's lack of leadership, management and crumbling roads.

Nuff Said - if this article was about leadership then the Urinal would mention something about the challenges that the Mayor faces and what he's done to cope with them. We know that Court was a good enough leader to rally behind St. Joes and the lack of emergency care for Saint Johners and we know he has backbone enough to stand-up to the mighty Goliath family.

This is just part of the daily vendetta that the Urinal has against Court. It gives people like YOU, something to complain about.

Billy Joel, I respect your opinion. Health care is an important issue but it is a PROVINCIAL issue not a municipal one. Air Quality is also very important and while a provincial issue, the TJ does give the Irvings holy heck when air quality parameters are breached. Anyone who drives in the city of SJ contributes to the air quality issue Should we have a car tax that goes into an air quality fund that supports improving air quality in SJ?

I deduce from your comments that you feel Mayor COurt is being unfairly critisized. But HE IS responsibile to the residents of SJ. HE is responsible for making the financial decisions. HE is responsible for the city streets, our water, our waste, the SJ pension plan and the city employee contracts. If there is a story that indicates that the city has issues, then I think it only right that our Mayor's name be mentioned.

Ella, I know that health care and air quality are provincial issues but could you tell me how you know that the paper does a good job reporting air quality? Do you know something that the rest of us don't? I stumbled onto an article by the the Conservation Council of NB that talked about how scientists are concerned about the extent pollution in SJ. Nothing like this has appeared in our paper! None of us know how bad things are all we know is that too many people are dying of odd type "rare" forms of cancer. My father being one.

The reason that I bring up this sort of stuff on an article about pot-holes is because I don't see that the article is really about pot-holes. Every day there is an article about pot-holes. These articles are about arm twisting politicians and if the Urinal does it to Court they do it to others as well. The reason that we are the second Sarnia is because politicians fear the wrath of the Goliaths. I like LIVING in Saint John!
