Cancelled

Pride Week, 2009 shifted to 2010

The Board of Directors of Port City Rainbow Pride Inc. announced the cancellation of Pride Week, 2009 due to a lack of confirmation for the week's events. "The Board recognized that too many events had not yet been confirmed and we could not provide the high quality Pride celebration the community and the region of Saint John have come to expect," Don Uhryniw, President of Port City Rainbow Pride Inc., said. Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual and Transgendered Pride is expected to be celebrated the week of August 7th to August 15th, 2010 in conjunction with Saint John's 225th anniversary.

Event

Free activities on West Side Fun Day

A magic show, barbecue, face painting and wagon rides are just some of the activities happening at West Side Fun Day at the Carleton Community Centre today. The event runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. A breakfast by donation will kick-off activities. The event is sponsored by the City of Saint John, the Carleton Community Centre Advisory Board and St. George's Church.

Communications

City may switch wireless plan

The city expects it could save $100,000 annually by switching its wireless cellular phone service provider from Aliant to Rogers Wireless Inc. The city had been with Aliant for about seven years and wanted to review current market prices, according to a city staff report. The city asked for bids from Aliant, Rogers and Telus. A city staff review found Rogers' bid was the best option. Staff will recommend to council at its meeting Monday night to select Rogers as its provider. The city has 196 cell phones, 54 Blackberry phones, 76 pagers and 27 PC air cards, the staff report said.

Challenge

Send reply cards if you put up flag

Judging from the national spirit Saint John Conservative MP Rodney Weston saw on Canada Day, he thinks there's a great chance his riding will win the Weston vs. Weston challenge. Weston bet a B.C. Conservative MP, John Weston, to see which riding would display more Canadian flags on the national holiday. All constituents in the riding were mailed flags and reply cards to indicate their participation. His office is waiting for more constituents to send in cards before final numbers are tallied. "I've been very impressed with the number of Canadian flags people have in the driveways or on their homes," Weston said. If the Saint John MP loses, he will present John Weston - who Prime Minister Stephen Harper calls "the western Weston-" with a case of Moosehead beer.
