HAMPTON - Woman stole more than 100 DVD movies

Michelle Helen Richard, 33, of Moncton was sentenced to 90 days in jail for stealing more than 100 DVDs from the Atlantic Superstore in Rothesay. This marks the seventh theft charge for the mother of three. Her record also consists of some drug charges, however, she told Hampton provincial court on Tuesday that she recently began a methadone program to help conquer her addiction. Richard, a lounge worker and part-time flagger, was seen on store surveillance tapes filling her pockets with $1,543.25 worth of DVD movies, Crown prosecutor Kelly Winchester said. She left the grocery store in a vehicle, and after she was picked up by police, the movies were returned to the Superstore.

Found guilty of lesser charge

SAINT JOHN - Originally charged with assault with a weapon or threat to use a weapon, Reuben Arthur McNeill, 21, was found guilty after trial of a lesser count of common assault on his ex-girlfriend during a domestic dispute inside their Waterloo Street apartment last Sept. 14. Provincial court Judge Anne Jeffrie also found him guilty of violating his probation, but not guilty of uttering threats of bodily harm or death. Sentencing was set over to 9:30 a.m. on July 24.

Conditional sentence for Grand Mananer

ST. STEPHEN - Provincial court Judge David Walker has imposed an eight-month conditional sentence on a Grand Manan man for sexual assault. Freddy Ross Green, 50, pleaded guilty April 15 to summary sexual assault against a minor on Grand Manan on July 16, 2008. The conditional sentence includes house arrest until Oct. 17. During this time he must notify his supervisor of his residence, not go outside except for verifiable work purposes, verifiable health care appointments, and for therapy and treatment as directed by his supervisor. The judge ordered Green's name be included on the national sex offender registry and required him to provide DNA samples.

Man who exposed himself gets jail

SAINT JOHN - Dana Eugene Graham appeared in provincial court to be sentenced for causing a disturbance. On Sept. 5, an intoxicated Graham showed up at a gathering on Lancaster Street uninvited, began yelling and screaming, took off his shirt and then exposed himself. Graham previously pleaded guilty to causing a disturbance. After the judge received a less than glowing pre-sentence report, he sentenced Graham to 15 days in jail and a $100 victim fine surcharge.

Man stole trading cards

SAINT JOHN - Christopher Gordon Totten pleaded guilty to theft under $5,000 after he stole trading cards from the Zellers at Lancaster Mall. Crown prosecutor Chris Titus said Totten gave security guards quite a song and dance. "He indicated he was going to sell them," Titus said. Totten was released on a form 12 until a pre-sentence report is completed. At one point, the judge asked if he was nervous as he stood before the court and he responded with a simple no. His mother, who sat behind her son in the courtroom, looked at the judge and nodded yes. He will return to court July 27.

SAINT JOHN - Judge William McCarroll found Owen A. MacKinnon guilty of impaired driving, although MacKinnon said he was only in the vehicle trying to keep warm. His foot slipped off the brake, he said, and that's why the vehicle reversed out of the parking space. On Feb. 7 at 2 a.m., police noticed the 50-year-old going toward his vehicle after they had warned him not to drive just a few minutes before. MacKinnon said he would get a cab and walked toward the uptown. After MacKinnon saw police leave the area, he returned to his van. Police noticed him watching them and they also returned to the parking lot off Sydney Street to check on the man. That's when they saw the vehicle moving. They blocked him in and arrested him. He was given a $1,000 fine, one-year driving prohibition and a $150 victim fine surcharge.

Oak Bay man returns July 7

ST. STEPHEN - An Oak Bay man charged with assault must return to St. Stephen provincial court July 7. Judge David Walker agreed to the request by his lawyer Gregory MacDonald for an adjournment. The conditions of his release, including no contact with the complainant, continue.

Stolen goods hidden in stroller

SAINT JOHN - Robert Clark Owens went into the Rothesay Superstore on April 20 with his girlfriend and put $85.97 worth of goods into their child's stroller. The goods included a pair of child's sandals, baby formula and a stuffed toy. The couple were caught by store staff. Charges against the woman were dropped. Owens, who has a lengthy criminal record and pleaded guilty, told Judge Alfred Brien he stole the goods because times were tough. He said it had nothing to do with drugs and he's been clean for a year. Owens will be back in court July 27 for sentencing. "You know you'll be going to jail?" Brien said. "Yeah, I figured," Owens said.

Lack of respect nets eight months

SAINT JOHN - Judge Andrew LeMesurier chastised Luke Alexander Banks for his lack of respect for the law and women. Banks was sentenced to eight months in jail for a variety crimes including assaulting a former girlfriend and her mother, breach of an undertaking, failure to attend court and fleeing police. The 21-year-old had been in custody since April 24 after leading police on a chase through the north end the night before. "You appear to have a complete disregard for police and authority," the judge said. "You have a lengthy adult record and you've only been an adult for a couple of years." Banks' current girlfriend was in the courtroom and the judge advised her she might want to reconsider the relationship. "He goes through relationships fairly quickly."

Woman admits assaulting officer

SAINT JOHN - On April 17, a taxi driver stopped outside police headquarters and asked for assistance. A woman had passed out in his cab and he couldn't wake her up. It was 4 a.m. When police finally woke up Jillian L. McLellan, she became verbally abusive, calling them "pigs." Inside the station, she took a swing at a female officer and kicked another officer in the leg. She pleaded guilty to a charge of assaulting a police officer and will return to court on July 30 for sentencing after a pre-sentence report is prepared. McLellan enrolled herself at Ridgewood Addictions Services following the incident. "I'm not that type of person and I don't ever want to be there again," she said.
