Fright Animal struck startled owner when he arrived at his building

SAINT JOHN - Chantal Doucette and Clayton Raynes were not happy when an uninvited guest showed up and went wild in their south end home.
On Thursday at 7:30 p.m. police were called to the couple's home on Britain Street. A deer had leapt through the window of their first floor apartment and destroyed many of the possessions inside.
Raynes discovered the deer upon returning home from work. It is estimated that the deer arrived a half hour before he did.
He was struck by the frightened animal when he entered the apartment, but was not injured. Raynes quickly fled the building.
"I was shocked, in disbelief, stressed out, mad," Doucette said, adding that they still haven't been able to find their cat, Smokey.
The deer destroyed their couch, their daughter's high chair, her bassinet, Doucette's gift for Father's Day and Raynes' model car collection, many of which are irreplaceable.
"There was quite a bit of damage," she said angrily.
Doucette added that they do not have tenant insurance and will have difficulty replacing what was lost.
Luckily, the deer only had access to the main rooms because two of the bedroom doors were closed.
Doucette was thankful that none of her family members were home at the time.
"I'm just thankful that he is OK," she said.
The deer remained in the apartment for close to three hours before officials from the Department of Natural Resources could trap and tranquilize it. The animal, however, sustained untreatable injuries in the incident and had to be put down.
Sgt. Patrick Bonner, public information office for the Saint John Police Force commented on the likelihood of deer showing up in south end homes.
"It's not common, but it's happened before," he said.
In May of 2007 a deer crashed through the window of another house on Britain Street, just metres from the couple's home. It escaped the area, leaving a bloody trail.
Another strange deer encounter occurred in the city centre in June, 2008 when a deer chased an 11-year old girl on her bike down Brunswick Drive.
