Crime
Male hospitalized after bat attack

A 27-year-old male was sent to hospital and another man was arrested after a beating in the north end involving a baseball bat. Sgt. Liz Chisholm of the Saint John Police Force said police responded to a report of an assault at about 1:30 a.m. Saturday morning on Stanley Street. Four to five people attacked the man, Chisholm said. The victim was taken to the hospital with a possible broken arm. An 18-year-old held after the assault was released and has a court date in early June, Chisholm said.

Education

Council supports immersion parents

Common council supports those who believe early French immersion in the province should not be eliminated, as the provincial Liberals are planning. A group of concerned parents represented by Tim Jackson and Michael Wilcott wrote a letter to council asking for their support. They granted it unanimously.

Emergency services

Court requests dispatch times

Coun. Ivan Court wants to know the dispatch times for Emergency Medical Services calls in the city's public safety communication centre. Court met in mid-March with Preston Holmes, the regional manager of Ambulance New Brunswick. In a letter to council, Court wrote that Holmes said it would three years until the province has a "mature ambulance service."

How can the council take the side of EFI on behalf of the city? They have not consulted city residents? They have no expertise in the issue. I would prefer my council to stay out of it!

It _is_ the business of City Council to take a stand on something that will have an impact on the city's ability to attract and keep prospective residents. It is also their business to take a stand when the educational choices of their youngest constituents are being diminished.
