
Literacy key issue in contract negotiations

FREDERICTON - It's negotiation time again.
The education ministry and the provincial teachers' union are hard at work trying to hammer out a new agreement. The old contract expired Feb. 29, and since that time the two sides have met for at least eight days of face-to-face talks.
Education Minister Kelly Lamrock said the department has identified certain key goals, including targeting new money toward areas that will bolster literacy skills, increase instructional time and reduce class sizes, especially in the early grades.
"Those are issues that we've put on the table," Lamrock said. "Certainly there are other issues as well."
He was confident that the two sides would reach
